In the heart of Bicol, a passionate individual, Don Antonio Regidor, laid the foundation for the thriving pilinut industry. Born in Spain in 1891, Don Antonio’s journey led him to the Philippines, where he fell in love with the abundance of pili trees. Choosing locally sourced nuts over imported ones, he began experimenting with his mother’s candy recipes.
In 1936, Don Antonio, alongside a former Moroccan foreign legionnaire, established the Central Pilinut Candy factory, pioneering the pilinut industry in the Bicol Region. Over the years, the legacy continued through his daughter Erlinda and later his granddaughters Rosemarie, Angelica, Elizabeth, and Agnes. Today, the New Albay Central Pilinut Candy is managed by Rosemarie Diaz-Battung, and in 2023, it was handed down to her eldest daughter, Audrey Rose Battung-Deocareza.
Don Antonio Regidor’s dedication and creativity were recognized with the 1971 Panday Pira Award of Excellence. He passed away on October 16, 1980, leaving behind a legacy that continues to thrive through the generations.
